Send and find an instant message

Messaging requires the relevant premium features to be enabled and support from your SIP service. This example uses a local test service which sends an automatic reply. It demonstrates SIP instant messaging, not mobile-network SMS. Presence availability also depends on your provider.

Steps
- For a service that supports SIP messaging, enable IM and Presence under the account’s Advanced SIP settings → Messaging.
- Save, enable the account again and confirm Registered.
- Open Contacts → Buddies, tap the add-person button, select the account and enter a display name and SIP address or extension. Save the buddy.
- Open Messages, tap +, choose New IM, then select the recipient.
- Type a message and tap the send arrow. Incoming replies appear in the same conversation.
- Return to Messages and use Search to find the conversation by name.

With messaging enabled in your premium features and supported by your SIP service, open Advanced SIP settings for the account. Under Messaging, switch on IM and Presence.
Save the settings, enable the account again and check it registers. Then save the account.
Next, open Contacts and choose Buddies. Tap the add-person button to add someone you want to message.
Choose the account, add a display name, and enter the person’s SIP address or extension. We’re adding a local test service.
Tap Save to add the buddy. Whether you can see their presence information depends on your phone service.
Now open Messages, tap the plus button, and choose New IM.
Choose the buddy you’d like to message.
Tap the message field and type your text. Check you’ve got the right person and that you’re happy with the message.
Tap the send arrow. Our test service replies automatically, so you can see the outgoing message and its reply together.
To find it again later, go back to Messages and use Search. Here, we’re searching for the buddy’s name.
Tap the result to reopen the conversation. This is SIP instant messaging, so it needs to be supported by your phone service.
