Text messages with Telnyx or Twilio

Your provider can assign a Telnyx or Twilio number to your BYO PBX account for text messaging in the softphone. They supply the account setup and enable messaging for you.

Availability. Your provider must enable this service and supply an app version that supports it.

Before you start

Use the account setup supplied by your provider and allow notifications when prompted. Your phone needs internet access over Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Texts use the messaging number assigned to your softphone account. This may be different from your mobile SIM number or your outgoing calling number.

Send a text

  1. Open Messages and select SMS if category tabs are shown.
  2. Tap + and choose New SMS.
  3. Select a contact, or enter the recipient’s full international number in To and tap the next arrow. Include + and the country code.
  4. Choose the account you want to use if prompted.
  5. Type your text and tap the send arrow.

To reply, open the conversation and send your next message from there.

Receive a text

Incoming texts appear in Messages. When the app is in the background or the phone is locked, a notification can alert you. Tap it to open the conversation.

If your phone was offline, reconnect and open the app to check for new messages. The phone’s notification and privacy settings control whether you see an alert, a sender name or a message preview.

Messages is missing

Ask your provider to check that messaging is enabled and that the correct number is assigned to your account. Use updated provisioning if they give you new account setup details. Changing a calling setting does not activate a texting service.

Texts arrive without an alert

Open Menu > Settings > Permissions and check notification access. In the phone’s system settings, allow notifications for the app and review Focus or Do Not Disturb and any background restrictions. For message sounds, open Menu > Settings > Preferences > Alerts and sounds.

To test, open the app, return to the Home screen and lock the phone. Ask someone to send a text to your assigned messaging number. If messages still appear only after you open the app, give your provider the time of the test and say whether you used Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Photos and group messages

This guide covers one-to-one text messages. Ask your provider about attachment and group-messaging availability before using those features.

Administrators can follow SMS for BYO PBX to set up the service.
